In the first of three consecutive away games, Welling United’s eight league game unbeaten run was ended with an only goal defeat by Farnborough.

It was not a game for the purists as there was little finesse in the hosts’ style of play, however, they won’t worry about that having ended their win-less spell of four games.

Rod Stringer made two changes to the Welling team who drew with Braintree Town on an energy sapping pitch three days earlier. Joe Ellul and Gene Kennedy were restored to the starting line up with Jack Burchell and Antony Papadopoulos taking a rest on the bench.

Maybe there was fatigue in their legs as the Wings were pinned back for the first twenty minutes and had to defend a succession of long throws and corners. However, the hosts only created one real chance, a header by Olly Pendlebury from a Guy Hollis long throw that Reice Charles-Cook tipped over.

Welling had looked like they were starting to get into the game when they conceded five minutes before half time. Another Hollis long throw caused problems, and this time, the Wings’ defence didn’t cope with it. It fell for Aaron Kuhl and he slammed it home.

Early in the second half, Welling’s Riccardo Di Trolio headed wide of the near post before Kuhl didn’t get a clean hit for the hosts when a corner was half cleared and it dribbled wide. Sonny Fish then did well to head down to Welling’s Lachlan Byrd but his shot was blocked inside the six yard box.

Cameron Green then hit the post with a great strike from twenty yards for the Wings before Byrd missed a great chance when heading over from Green’s free kick. CJ Hearn headed wide for Farnborough before Jason Adigun came close at the other with an effort that dipped over.

Kuhl came close to making the game safe for Farnborough with a first time shot that went close but Welling didn’t create another chance despite making a triple change with seven minutes remaining.

Although Welling will feel a little hard done by in going home empty handed, they did not make Farnborough goalkeeper Jack Turner work hard enough for his clean sheet.
