Defeat at Bath City continued Welling United’s poor run when travelling west.

They started the season by conceding five away to Truro City, lost one-nil at Taunton Town, shipped in another five at Torquay United, and four at Weston-super-Mare. They hoped to break the run at Bath but lost heavily once again.

Jordan Thomas drew a good save out of Reice Charles-Cook in the early stages however, Welling edged the first quarter of the match without creating clear cut opportunities. That changed when the Wings won a corner but delivered it so poorly that Bath were able to break away. They worked it out to Elliott Frear and his measured cross was headed home by Scott Wilson.

Frear had a chance of his own when heading towards the bottom corner but Charles-Cook stuck a leg out to turn it around the post before Frear again turned provider when finding Dan Hayfield but his effort was well off target.

In first half injury time the Romans scored their second. Frear was again involved when his cross was knocked down by Tom Smith for Thomas to scramble it home.

At the interval, Welling manager Danny Bloor made a double change bringing on Adam Roscrow and Jephte Tanga, and the Wings came close to pulling one back soon after the restart. Kain Adom slipped Tristan Abrahams through. He tried to clip it home but goalkeeper Will Buse was out quickly to block with his body.

However, after eight minutes of the second half, Bath added a third to kill off any hope that Welling had of getting back into the match. Frear was again given far too much space and he had time to pick out an unmarked Hayfield who headed home gleefully.

Jordan Dyer hit the crossbar with a header and Thomas shot wide for the Romans, although with the contest already decided, they were comfortable to sit on what they had and conserve their energy.

That did not stop them from adding a fourth with three minutes remaining. Thomas worked his way into the penalty area and was brought down by Tanga, and a penalty was awarded. Cody Cooke converted and the Wings were consigned to another demoralising defeat.

Bloor will now have to pick his team up for the festive season double header with Dartford in the knowledge that if they cannot self-motivate for those games, they may not be the right players for the club.
