Gareth Southgate has been England Manager for 8 years, and only now has the question arisen over whether he should still be at this rank. Many think that he is deserved of this role, others think he needs to be sacked immediately. Which one is more reasonable?

First, we have to look at what Southgate has achieved during his spell as gaffer of The Three Lions. Absolutely nothing. In England’s ‘Golden Era’, Southgate has gotten to a World Cup semi-final and the Final of the Euros, which many will remember as we lost to Italy on penalties. For an England team that goes into competitions nowadays as one of the favourites and always producing an underwhelming show it clearly shows that some change needs to happen.

Secondly, let’s look at his player selection. A Fikayo Tomori who has one the Scudetto with AC Milan has featured 5 times for England. 21 year old Harvey Elliot, who is playing the best he ever has is being picked for the U21 squad where he scored a brace against Azerbaijan and is flicking rabona-volley-keepie-up passes in a 7 -0 win over Luxembourg. However a Jordan Henderson, who was lazing about in Saudi Arabia for 6-months is still starting, and Kalvin Philips who played 4 premier league games last season has only just been dropped. No wonder we don’t perform on the big stage.

Lastly, the footprint he has left. No honours is one thing, but there seems to be no identity and a lacking game plan in this England side. Players playing out of position is something Southgate has been heavily criticised for and there seems to be no system in place that players can follow.

With a load of Managers available at the moment, I think its obvious that Southgate needs to go sooner rather than later.
