Luton Town snatched a 90th minute winner in their 2-1 Johnstone’s Paint Trophy win over Leyton Orient.

Luton took the lead in the first half through an excellent strike from Danny Green. But Orient equalised after 59 minutes through Lloyd James’ penalty.

The match was heading for penalties but Ryan Hall’s shot deflected off Stephen O’Donnell late on to dump Ian Hendon’s side out of the competition.

The O’s made five changes to the side which defeated Bristol Rovers with debuts for Liverpool defender Joe Maguire and goalkeeper Charlie Grainger. Alex Cisak was on international duty with Australia while Mathieu Baudry was sidelined with an Achilles injury.

Ollie Palmer, Blair Turgott and Scott Kashket were handed opportunities to impress in the side with Paul McCallum, Dean Cox and Jay Simpson rested.

The visitors created the first chance of the game through Lloyd James but his shot was comfortably saved by Mark Tyler.

Former Orient defender Scott Cuthbert went close from a corner but he flicked a corner narrowly wide of the target.

The hosts had a good chance to take the lead through Scott Griffiths but he sent his header just over the bar.

But Luton grabbed the opening goal on the half hour mark when Green struck a superb shot into the top corner from the edge of the area.

The Hatters went close again just before the break through Green but his fierce strike was deflected round the post by Frazer Shaw.

Orient struggled to create anything of note in the opening half but spurned a decent chance right at the end when Palmer broke but his tame shot was saved by Tyler.

The O’s made a change for the second half with Freddy Moncur handed his debut in place of Sean Clohessy.

Luton threatened once more through goalscorer Green but his cross was parried by Grainger.

Turgott had an opportunity on the edge of the penalty area but the winger’s shot was straight at Tyler.

But Orient were awarded a penalty when Kashket was brought down in the area by Griffiths. James stepped up and confidently fired home his second penalty in the space of four days.

The O’s were looking more dangerous during the second half and Kashket went close but the youngster’s shot was well held by Tyler.

Kashket was really providing a threat for the visitors and he almost fired them in front when he cut in from the right byline and his shot was cleared off the line by Stephen McNulty.

Marriott has a decent chance but could only head over the bar. It was the last action of the game for him though as an offensive hand signal towards the away fans resulted in him being shown a red card.

Orient defender Myles Judd was given his debut in the last ten minutes in place of James.

The O’s had a big chance to snatch victory from Sammy Moore’s free-kick but Connor Essam blasted over from close range.

Attacker Sandro Semedo was also handed his first appearance for the club late on as a replacement for Palmer.

The tie was heading for a penalty shootout but the Hatters snatched victory in the 90th minute when Hall’s shot was deflected in off O’Donnell for the winner.
