Barnet boss Martin Allen plans to make a decision on who will be the Bees’ second-choice goalkeeper on Tuesday after tonight’s final game of pre-season against Northwood (7.30pm kick-off).

Former Liverpool and Newport County stopper Jamie Stephens played the full 90 minutes and kept a clean sheet in Saturday’s 2-0 win at Eastleigh, becoming the fourth goalkeeper to turn out on trial this summer as the search for Graham Stack’s understudy continues.

Youngster Chris Haigh was on the bench once more and is expected to play some part in tonight’s tussle against the Southern League Division One Central Woods.

Ashlee Jones and Daniel Lincoln have also featured in pre-season and although the latter is no longer training with the Bees, it is unclear whether or not the former remains with the squad after Allen said he was “allowed” to train on Saturday when asked.

Speaking after victory over the Spitfires, Allen stated he would make a decision when the Bees return to training at The Hive on Tuesday.

“I thought it was important I took my time and looked around the various goalkeepers and chatted with them to see what they are like as people,” he explained. “No doubt we will make a decision on Tuesday when we go back into training.”

Asked to assess the performance of 21-year-old Stephens, who made 13 appearances in two seasons for Newport, Allen gave little away in his reply.

“We will have to see how that one pans out,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Bees boss moved to reassure supporters that regular number one Stack will be fit to take his place between the sticks at Leyton Orient on Saturday as the League Two seasons gets underway.

The 34-year-old gloveman has been limited to one pre-season run-out - against Crystal Palace - thanks to a thigh strain

“Graham could have played but I decided a few days ago he was not going to,” said Allen.

“I decided he needs more rehab and more strength and conditioning work with our physio and it is important we get this minor strain [right] and take good care of that.

“If push came to shove he could have played but I think it was better to protect him and hopefully he will be ready to train on Thursday and going forward into next week he will ready.”

And Allen also confirmed winger Ben Tomlinson had suffered no ill effects after an aerial collision in the second-half at the Silverlake Stadium left him requiring treatment before he was replaced by Curtis Weston near the end of the game.

“He had a collision and there was a nasty tackle so I thought it was best to get him off and take away any hassle there might have been out there,” stated Allen. “I did not want him reacting or trying to get any revenge. He is fine.”
