Leyton Orient completed their pre-season campaign with a 1-0 win at League One side Southend United this afternoon.

Ian Hendon’s side took the lead in the first half through Paul McCallum’s sixth goal of pre-season with a spectacular half-volley.

Southend had their chances to equalise in the second period but Orient claimed the victory in their final match before next Saturday's season opener at home to Barnet.

Orient picked a strong side for their final warm-up game with Sean Clohessy captaining the side.

The O’s had the ball in the net after 20 minutes but McCallum’s effort was ruled out for offside.

Orient opened the scoring midway through the half with a stunning long-range half-volley from McCallum.

Southend almost equalised straight away but Cian Bolger headed against the visitors’ post.

The hosts almost equalised at the start of the second half but goalkeeper Alex Cisak made a superb save to keep out Jack Payne’s effort.

Orient made a substitution when goalscorer McCallum was taken off and Scott Kashket, despite playing 90 minutes yesterday, was introduced.

The Shrimpers should have equalised through substitute Noel Hunt but he missed the target from close range.

Southend went close again through former Orient striker David Mooney but he drilled his low strike just past the post.

The hosts were finishing the stronger side and substitute David Worrall was denied by another decent save from Cisak.

The Shrimpers were unlucky late on when Luke Prosser's header was cleared off the line by Lloyd James.

But the O's managed to keep a clean sheet as they finished their build-up to the League Two season with a win over their rivals.
