Former Barnet loanee Conor Clifford joins up with the Bees for pre-season training today after the departure of Luisma Villa opened up a slot in the side.

The Spaniard left The Hive last week after electing to return to Spain following two years in north London. And that means there is a space in the side – and this season’s budget – to accommodate another midfield player.

Both head coach Martin Allen and midfield workaholic Clifford have made their intention to re-unite at Barnet clear already and now the Dubliner will return The Hive in an attempt to win a contract.

Speaking on Saturday, the Bees boss said: “Conor Clifford is coming in training on Monday. There was certain other parts of the jigsaw I had to put in place.

“I have got three central midfield players so I have got most of the key positions in place now so there is no rush. With Conor, obviously with Luisma going another gap has opened up so he is still a consideration.”

Clifford told the Times Series earlier this summer he was keen to return to the club after being released by Southend United at the end of the season.

“I would love to go back and play under Martin Allen,” he confirmed. “Obviously he is looking to see who he can bring in at the minute but I would love to come back and play for Barnet in the league.”

The 23-year-old former Chelsea youngster spent three months on loan with the Bees last season and played 13 times as Allen’s men won the Conference on the final day of the season to clinch a return to the Football League.
