Three gold medals fired Richmond’s sporting youngsters to the top of the London Youth Games Jubilee Trophy standings last week.

Newland House, St James’ School and the borough’s representative inclusive zone basketball (IZB) team all triumphed at Crystal Palace last week, with St Stephens School and the German School collecting silver medals.

Richmond top the table by five points ahead of nearest rivals Wandsworth.

Newland House’s Year Five/Six mixed netballers beat Redbridge’s St Aubyns School 5-0 in their final, but it was St James’ School who left team manager Jo Parker purring.

The Twickenham school’s Year Five/Six girls footballers drew 1-1 with Lewisham’s Baring Primary School before holding their nerve to edge the decisive penalty shoot-out.

“I never thought we’d be here as champions,” said Parker.

“They play together as a team, they play for each other and I am just so proud of what they have achieved.

“It’s very important for them to play at this level. They are quite a few girls in this team who I look forward to maybe seeing play in a women’s team and maybe even for England. Wouldn’t that be great?”

Richmond’s IZB team completed the golden haul with an 8-6 final win over Southwark, which saw them go one step further than last year’s silver medal.

The German School’s lost their Year Five/Six quicksticks hockey final to Bromley on penalties and St Stephens won silver in the Year Five/Six mixed football event, also losing in the final in a penalty shootout.
