Croydon Central MP Gavin Barwell is said to be under investigation after claims he did not correctly declare expenses for his office during the General Election last May.

According to the Mirror, the MP was reported to police in Croydon by a constituent.

Mr Barwell's expenses show £71.76 claimed for his business rates, the equivalent of £1.84 per day for his office space, shared with two other Conservative candidates through the election period.

He told the Mirror: "I am informed by my election agent that rent is included in the Return under the heading ‘Business rates’ as the rent figures are derived from the rateable value shown on the business rate bill.

"Unlike my Labour opponent, I didn’t rent a campaign office.

"The administration of the campaign was done from the headquarters of CroydonConservative Federation, which is not in my constituency.

"Croydon Conservatives own this building so we don’t pay any rent. In such circumstances, the law requires you to declare a notional rent.

"This was calculated based on the rateable value.

"The building was used not just for my campaign but also for those of our candidates in Croydon South and Croydon North as well as to run the day-to-day activities of theConservative Party in Croydon and for other purposes not connected with the Conservative Party so we are only required to declare a fraction of the notional rent."

The MP has not addressed the concerns on twitter in recent days.

He had to apologies after the 2010 election after it was revealed he failed to declare some of his leaflet expenditure.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "Officers have received an allegation and it is currently being assessed."
