A Coulsdon couple have recieved royal approval for their years of volunteering work.

Mike and Diana Thompson, both members of the Crawley Mariners Yacht Club, received a lifetime commitment award from Princess Anne at the Royal Yachting Association's (RYA) annual ceremony for volunteers.

The Thompsons joined CMYC as beginners in 1989, and over the years have become heavily involved in all aspects of club life.

During their time at the club they have both served on a number of committees, volunteered as instructors, and supervised the club's training courses and residential weekends for young sailors.

Nominated by their club, the Thompsons were chosen for the award by the RYA senior judging panel.

Altogether 53 awards were handed out to volunteers from across the country at the ceremony in London on Friday, November 20.

Duncan Truswell, RYA sport development manager, said: "The RYA Volunteer Awards are our opportunity to say 'thank you’ on behalf of clubs and associations that affiliate to the RYA, to their volunteers, the people that really make a difference to help people get afloat.

"It’s our opportunity to take a bit of time out to appreciate the commitment these individuals make to the sport in helping people get afloat safely and enjoyably."
