A motorcyclist was hospitalised following a crash minutes before a fatal collision on the same road, it has emerged.

On Thursday a woman was killed after being struck by a transit van while crossing Sewardstone Road in Waltham Abbey, close to the border with Chingford.

Just 20 minutes earlier an ambulance was called to the same stretch of road at 5.05pm to an accident involving a motorbike and a car at the junction with Daws Hill.

An ambulance service spokeswoman said: “We sent three ambulances to attend and we took one patient, a man in his 40s, to Whipps Cross Hospital in Leytonstone.”

His condition is currently unknown.

The Ambulance service was then called at 5.24pm to the second collision.

The 36-year-old woman, who lived in a nearby care home, died in hospital after being struck by a white transit van as she got off a bus.

The spokeswoman said: "We sent three ambulances and a doctor to attend. Despite the best efforts of the crew, the patient sadly died at North Middlesex Hospital."

County Councillor Ricki Gadsby has said she has the highways department about improving road safety measures on the road.
