More than 120,000 people in the Redhill area will receive fines at the end of October for not completing their tax returns.
Fines start at £100 but will increase over time, and can end up costing people thousands of pounds. HMRC will also issue a fine even if there is no tax to pay.
Paper self assessments must be returned by 31 October, while online returns have a later deadline.
Filing online will mean tax is calculated automatically and so the return process is faster. To register for online filing, visit www.gov.uk/register-for-self-assessment and follow the on screen instructions.
Help and advice on filing your return is available on the GOV.UK website at www.gov.uk/selfassessment-tax-returns or from the Self assessment helpline on 0300 200 3310.
